How we caught it
The scan provided a clue
A stored history code related to the engine oil-pressure system suggested a previous low-oil-pressure event.
The visual inspection revealed the truth
Using a flashlight and inspection mirror, we found fresh oil seeping from the rear main seal area between the engine and transmission.
The under-carriage confirmed the severity
The underside of the engine and transmission was coated in thick oil and grime. This was a major ongoing leak, not a small seep.
Live data showed the risk
Oil temperature was higher than normal and oil pressure fluctuated at idle, suggesting the engine was not getting the lubrication it needed.
The oil-level check finished the picture
The engine oil was significantly low. A high-performance AMG engine running low on oil is a ticking time bomb.
The result
We showed the client the oil-pressure code, rear-main-seal leak, oil-soaked undercarriage, high oil temperature and low oil level. Repairing a rear main seal on a Mercedes-AMG can cost $2,500 to $6,000 or more. If the engine has been run low on oil, an engine rebuild could cost $20,000 or more.
